Mohammerah's Contribution During World War I

During World War I, the Emirate of Mohammerah played a strategic role in supporting the British war effort, primarily through its control over vital oil reserves and its geopolitical significance in the broader context of the Middle East. Mohammerah's strategic location, access to oil, and alliance with Britain allowed it to provide critical support to the Allies during the conflict. This support extended to the British Navy, the Allied supply lines, and even military assistance to other Arab principalities in their resistance against Turkish forces.

Sheikh Khaz'al’s Alliance with Britain

The importance of Mohammerah during the war cannot be overstated, largely due to Sheikh Khaz'al’s strategic alliance with Britain, which had been cultivated over decades. A significant aspect of this relationship was the control of British Petroleum (then the Anglo-Persian Oil Company APOC), which had been granted permission to operate in the region after the discovery of oil in 1908. By the time of World War I, the Abadan refinery, had become one of the most important sources of oil for the British Empire. This oil was essential, not only for fueling the British Navy, but also for supporting the broader war logistics across various fronts. The uninterrupted flow of oil from this region was vital for the Royal Navy's operations and the Allies' overall military capacity.

Strategic Use of Muhammara’s Resources

As the war progressed, the significance of the region only increased. In 1914, when tensions were escalating globally, Sheikh Khaz'al agreed to allow the British Navy to use his palace in Basrah as a hospital for its soldiers. This gesture was part of his broader support to the British, further solidifying the alliance. Khaz'al's willingness to provide such resources reflected his recognition of the importance of maintaining good relations with Britain. The palace was transformed into a field hospital for British soldiers recovering from wounds sustained on various fronts.

Securing the Oil Pipeline for the British Navy

Perhaps the most critical contribution of the Emirate of Mohammerah during the war was the securing of oil pipelines that were essential to the British war effort. The pipeline linking the oil fields of Masjid Suleiman to the Arabian Gulf, became a vital supply route for the Allies. The British Navy relied heavily on this pipeline to maintain the necessary oil reserves for its fleets, and Mohammerah was essential in ensuring the protection of these pipelines from both internal and external threats. His close relations with Britain ensured that the infrastructure remained secure, contributing directly to the success of British naval operations. The oil company’s operations were crucial to the British war machine, and Khaz’al's support in facilitating the uninterrupted transport of oil was indispensable to Britain’s military strategy.

Military Assistance to the Sultanate of Nejd

In addition to providing logistical and infrastructural support, Mohammerah also extended military assistance to the Sultanate of Nejd in its conflict against Ottoman-backed forces. The Sultan of Nejd, Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, was engaged in a series of battles against Ottoman forces and other tribal entities aligned with the Turks in the Arabian Peninsula. Sheikh Khaz'al provided military aid to Ibn Saud’s forces, enabling them to effectively fight against the Ottoman-backed factions. This military cooperation contributed to the eventual success of Ibn Saud in consolidating control over the central Arabian Peninsula, which would later culminate in the formation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

Mohammerah's Geopolitical Impact

Despite the lack of direct military involvement in the war, the contributions of Mohammerah to World War I were undeniably significant. The region's geopolitical importance was underscored by its role as a supply hub for oil, which fueled both the British Navy and other military assets. Khaz'al’s efforts to secure key resources and offer assistance to other Arab states in their resistance to Ottoman rule positioned Mohammerah as a key player in the larger Arabian independence strategy.
